from E-Week:
quote:
The current worm of the week, Palyh, continued to spread rapidly Monday afternoon, with some users seeing as many as a dozen copies an hour. The worm first appeared over the weekend in Asia and Europe and began spreading in earnest here Monday.
Palyh's behavior and appearance should hold no surprises for veteran computer users, experts said.

"Any e-mail arriving from an address like 'support@microsoft.com' containing an attachment should look like a huge billboard reading 'I am a virus' to every computer user," said Ian Hameroff, security strategist at Computer Associates International Inc., in Islandia, N.Y.

you would think it would not spread so quickly in Asia. Then again, it does explain why Islam is a major religon there and authoritarianism so oft accepted. Yet, I make gross exagerations.

you jest about a virus in asia, but the reality can be a lot worse...

when code red (both variants) struck i was doing second level tech support on a network in a 2400+ node site in vancouver, washington. the company is a fortune 50 international with offices in (amoung other places) hongkong and singapore. before the firewalls on our intranet (the supposedly safer world of the corporate network) were hardened and set to kill all code red related incoming traffic, our internal logs had more hits from them than all other sources combined.

as i remember, when i checked those firewalls months later, they were still getting occasional hits from code red on ip ranges that belonged to the singapor and hongkong folks.

now i should say that it is true that we had a fair number of our own engineers (otherwise brilliant folks) who had no idea how to handle security.

we would disconnect their workgroup webservers, but they would insist on rebuilding them... they would wipe them and reinstall win2k and iis. problem was, they would reconnect them before the install and code red would hit and infect the boxes before they could patch the base software (the second version of code red was especially good at doing that).

in at least one case, i had to shut down one server 3 times before the workgroup's manager's manager got them to stop trying to do it themselves and let us do it right.

hmmm, i did get a wee bit off topic, didn't i?

um... arcane, is it music:

a) to hear of similar sufferings to those you have gone through?

b) to learn that just because an electrical engineer has three workstations at his/her desk (the sum value of which is greater than the value of my house) they don't always have the logical powers of the average six year old?

c) to see me get your topic off course in reasonable time?

d) all of the above?

e) something else?

vote now, operators are standing by... not for your answer, but i am sure there are operators standing by somewhere...

well, actually, with unions and computers, they are probably sitting... in fact, there may only be six in the entire USA who are actually real, but i digress.

ah, i see...

didn't have her, but i am a UHK grad, majored in NST (with honors as an OPT), and have my masters in SIP... does that count?

(for those of you who don't live for the acronyms, those are:
UHK = University of Hard Knocks;
NST = Network Software Torture;
OPT = Office Politics Target; &
SIP = Self Inflicted Pain)
