How come you don't just use the Over Drive feature in Control Panel? Is there a better way to set GPU and memory speed?

I am using the control panel to overclock. Test is running now. Couldn't go with 1550 on the memory with the 6.6 driver, so lowered it to 1500. The 6.6s were the first time performance took a hit. The 6.7s are supposed to be coming out soon. I am not switching back to the 6.5s as the degradation isn't that big.

Woo hoo, tweaked a little more and found what I had lost. I realize I am not using a consistent setting for benchmarking, but I forgot the settings I had been using for the last 2-3 sets of drivers. I think these are close and I will use this from now on.
Here are my settings GPU Core speed: 675MHz Memory clock speed: 1530MHz
3Dmark06 score 4995 (+38) SM2 score: 2169 (+39) SM3 score: 2637 (+14) CPU score: 1022 (-1)

Performance dropped for the 6.7s although I ran the test twice and pretty different numbers. (I used the best test run).
Here are my settings GPU Core speed: 675MHz Memory clock speed: 1530MHz

Ok so how come your SM3 score is so much higher than mine? And where are you overclocking in control panel? Then only thing I saw was was the Over Drive.

FINALLY BROKE 5000 with the piece of DELL
Was not sure why the performance dropped, but had a hunch that my OC settings were not dialed in right. On the last round of tests, I immediately noticed a framerate drop, but left before th CPU tests. For some reason the card is way more sensitive to memory clock speed changes than GPU.
I ran the test again this morning and noticed a tiny bit of artifacting during the floating orbs test (right before the CPU). That validated my hunch.
After lowering the memory clock speed, presto, massive performance improvement. I am going to play around with the settings some more to see where the thresholds are.
Here are my settings GPU Core speed: 675MHz Memory clock speed: 1512MHz
3Dmark06 score 5006 (+63) SM2 score: 2214 (+98) SM3 score: 2610 (-11) CPU score: 1021 (NC)

Well, I tweaked a little more and figured out the memory clock speed is the most sensitive of the two features to overclock. I used the auto overclock feature to let the app decide the optimal settings and it maxed out GPU and acutally determined the memory speed that I used on the last test. I will probably back it off a little to try to the temp down.
Here are my settings GPU Core speed: 689MHz Memory clock speed: 1512MHz
3Dmark06 score 5033 (+27) SM2 score: 2227 (+13) SM3 score: 2630 (+20) CPU score: 1022 (+1)
In contrast, here are the scores from the very first test after installing the card:
3Dmark 06 score: 4513 SM2 score : 2002 SM3 score: 2228 CPU score: 986

I still don't see how you got 400 out of your SM3 score. Mine was higher than your starting out but then you went way up.
When I used the ATI tool to OC the x800xt you couldn't do much with the memory.
I'm still having problems with the control panel. All I see is the Over drive area and I can't turn mine up no where near what you are doing. The slider is at the top on both and the GPU is at 621 and the memory at 720. So is my card different than yours or is my control panel missing something. I did have it lockup the first time I tried to install.
I'm installing the newest driver now (6.7) so maybe I'll have better luck.
I'm either missing something or my card is not compatible with the control panel. I got the Asus X1900XT but both of my sliders are locked at the top and the bottom number is the same as the top making me think I can't OC the card. What's up with that?
I ran the automatic configuration for Over Drive to let it maximize and monitor the card OC settings but can't tell if it's doing anything or not. I did check that box that says apply OD setting for 3D applications only so maybe I just can't see it until a 3D application starts. Who knows.
Ooops OD must be working. I ran 3DMark and a warning message popped up and said my memory is running at an unsafe temp and will be reduced.

You should have two vertical sliders that list he Grpahics Processor Status and Graphics Memory Status. The max on the processor is 690 Mhz, the max on the memory is 800 Mhz (multiply by two to get total). Use the the vertical sliders to set the speeds for 3d applications otherwise it runs at sme really reduced speeds to keep the temperature down (500 and 594Mhz). If you don't want to OC, turn off the Overdrive an it will run at stock speeds (621 and 720Mhz).
I can't run the memory too high so I couldn't run it at the top.

My sliders are showing 621 and 720 all the time for max and it's at the top and bottom. It shows my gpu is running at 500 with 621 requested and I can't move the sliders or turn off Over Drive.

Ok I give up. I can't get my GPU to run anywhere near what Older says his is at. I even downloaded the beta version of ATITool to get it to work with the X1900.
I went back to using the OD and got these results:
3DMark Score 5497
SM2 2184 SM3 2476 CPU 1668

That's awsome Rigor. Don't worry about the low CPU score. I don't think BF2 reqires much from the CPU but really taxes the graphic card. You are way ahead of anyone else.

I gotta do the same thing, but first a new mobo, faster cpu, better memory THEN the video card! Ouch!

That sounds like a total overhaul Bedpan. expect to spend around $1000. It sounds bad but if your machine is over 2 years old you're past due.
When I upgraded mine, I didn't check into the mobo close enough and it only supports 2gigs of memory. Make sure you get one that supports 4 and the fastest FSB speed you can find. I think the last time I checked they were up to 1000+ FSB I opted for 800 but next time . . . .

To Specimen: she has one more to take, this Tuesday, then the dollars will start rolling in...I hope!
To Cath: I have a decent system now. At least it plays all the games great. Athlon 64 3000@ 2GB of mem, sata drives, 2000 fsb. But it's AGP and my video is an aging Radeon 9800 Pro. So to upgrade I have to do the mobo and video. The CPU and mem can wait.
